What is a mood board and when do you use them?

A mood board is a series of slides that help visually communicate a vision. We use mood boards in a number of different areas in our business. For instance, when planning the next set of colors for production, the mood of the photoshoot, the style to be worn, the make-up to be used, designing process etc.

There are so many different ways to communicate the same idea (verbally, visually or auditory). We try to use all the different methods as much as possible to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Specifically for the photoshoot, using a mood board is helpful to convey the vision to the photographer. It helps the photographer visualize the colors, ambiance, and feel for the photos. The photo here is what we used to convey for the theme of our website photoshoot.

Our modest fashion brand business is very cross cultural. We work with people from all around the world, some sharing a similar culture and others not. In order to keep clear dialogue and open communication, we spend a lot of time ensuring communication happens using multiple streams.

Have you ever used a mood board for your business?
